About this tool
Why use this tool
Knowing your exact age — in years, months, days and hours — matters for a range of British life events: verifying State Pension age (now 66, rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028 under the Pensions Act 2014, then 68 from 2044), Junior ISA to adult ISA conversion at 18, driving licence eligibility (17 for a car, 16 for a moped), and confirming ISA/SIPP contribution windows. Pediatricians and health visitors use weeks and months for the first two years under the NHS Healthy Child Programme.
How it works
The tool calculates the exact interval between your date of birth and today, expressed as complete years, months and remaining days. Leap years are handled automatically (every 4 years, except centuries not divisible by 400). The hours calculation uses 24 × 365.25 days per year, in line with NPL (National Physical Laboratory) time standards.
Real example
Someone born on 15 June 1995, on 10 July 2026 is exactly 31 years, 0 months and 25 days old — approximately 271,756 hours or 11,323 days. This precision is useful for confirming SIPP tax-relief eligibility (contributions permitted up to age 75), planning a State Pension claim (you must claim manually via gov.uk; it's not automatic), or checking Bereavement Support Payment eligibility windows (18 months from date of death).
Practical tips
UK legal age milestones: 16 (moped, marry with parental consent, National Insurance number issued, leave school in England); 17 (car driving licence, aircraft pilot licence); 18 (vote, marry independently, adult ISA, alcohol purchase, sign legal contracts); 21 (adopt a child, some HGV categories); 55 (access personal pension under current rules, rising to 57 in 2028 under the Finance Act 2022); 66 (State Pension currently); 75 (SIPP tax relief ends). For milestone anniversaries: 25 years silver, 50 gold, 60 diamond, 65 blue sapphire (Queen Elizabeth II's Sapphire Jubilee, 2017).
