Why use this tool

The biological age calculator estimates your body's functional age relative to your chronological age, based on modifiable lifestyle factors. UK research from UCL, King's College and Imperial has shown lifestyle can shift biological age by more than a decade — critical given healthy life expectancy in the UK is 63.1 years for men and 63.9 for women (ONS 2023).

How the calculation works

The tool adjusts your chronological age using 10 evidence-based factors: physical activity, Mediterranean or Eatwell-style diet, sleep, smoking, alcohol, chronic stress, social contact, BMI, blood pressure and family history. Each factor can add or subtract several years based on studies including UK Biobank and Whitehall II.

Real example

A 55-year-old non-smoker who does 150 min/week of moderate exercise, sleeps 7.5 hours, eats a Mediterranean-style diet and has strong social ties might have a biological age of 47 (−8). The same person smoking 10 cigarettes/day, sedentary, sleeping poorly and drinking 30 units/week could hit 66 (+11) — nearly two decades of difference.

Practical tips

Follow Chief Medical Officers' guidance: 150 minutes of moderate activity per week plus strength exercises twice weekly. Quit smoking — the NHS Smokefree service (0300 123 1044) offers free support and prescription patches. Limit alcohol to under 14 units/week spread over 3+ days (NHS/Drink Aware). These studies inform the direction and rough scale of the adjustments, not an exact clinical measurement.
How much can biological age differ between two people who are the same chronological age?
Quite substantially in modelled examples: a person with consistently favourable habits and one with consistently unfavourable habits at the same starting age can show a gap of well over a decade in these lifestyle-based estimates. This illustrates how much modifiable behaviour can matter, even though the individual numbers remain indicative rather than diagnostic.
Does the NHS offer biological age testing?
Not routinely. The NHS Health Check, offered every five years to adults aged 40 to 74, assesses cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and BMI and can generate a risk score like QRISK, but this is a different concept from a single biological age figure. Biological age testing via epigenetic clocks is mostly available through private labs, not standard NHS care.
Can chronic stress alone shift biological age?
Research has linked prolonged psychological stress to shortened telomeres and altered inflammatory markers, both associated with faster biological ageing in cohort studies.
