Why use this tool
The biological age calculator estimates your body's functional age relative to your chronological age, based on lifestyle factors. Research from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the NIH shows that lifestyle can shift biological age by 10+ years, affecting healthy life expectancy which averages 66 years in the US according to CDC data.
How the calculation works
Starting from your chronological age, the tool applies adjustments (positive or negative) based on 10 evidence-backed factors: regular physical activity, Mediterranean or DASH diet, sleep quality, tobacco use, alcohol intake, chronic stress, social connections, BMI, blood pressure and family history. Each factor can subtract up to 3 years or add up to 8, based on epidemiological studies (Nurses' Health Study, Framingham).
Real example
A 50-year-old non-smoker who exercises 5x/week, sleeps 7.5 hours, follows a DASH-style diet and reports strong social ties may have an estimated biological age of 43 (−7). The same 50-year-old smoking, sedentary, sleeping 5 hours with poor diet and high stress could reach 60 (+10) — a 17-year swing.
Practical tips
Follow CDC guidelines: 150 minutes/week of moderate aerobic exercise plus 2 strength sessions. Quit smoking (call 1-800-QUIT-NOW, free). Limit alcohol to 1 drink/day for women, 2 for men per Dietary Guidelines. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep (National Sleep Foundation). Manage stress (mindfulness, therapy — most insurance covers mental health under the ACA). Maintain social ties: loneliness raises mortality risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes/day (Surgeon General's Advisory 2023). Get annual wellness visits — free under most ACA plans.
